Two receive concert association scholarships

Two seniors from St. Mary Parish are heading to their respective universities with scholarships provided by Morgan City Live, Community Concert Association.
CCA President Floyd Cloutier presented each of the honorees, Aimee Elizabeth Galloway and Kathryn Grace Wilkinson, with a $1,000 Marlene Hendrix Memorial Music Scholarship prior to the group’s last concert of the season in April.
Galloway, daughter of Thomas and Sandra Galloway is a 4.0 graduate of Patterson High School and will be majoring in music education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. At Patterson High she was a member of the National Beta Club, National Society of High School Scholars, PHS Drama Club and Quiz Bowl,
and participated in social and community events.
Wilkinson, a 4.0 graduate of Berwick High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Wilkinson, and enrolled at Northwestern State University in music education. At Berwick she won the Outstanding
Woodwind Award, was member of District and State Honor Choir, participated in volleyball and track, and represented her school at Literary Rally.
Marlene Hendrix served as president of the Community Concert Association for over 10 years and left a
huge musical legacy, the organization said. Cloutier said “she was the driving force for the group to sign with Live on
Stage, in order to provide higher quality entertainment at affordable prices.”
For over 30 years beginning in 1966, she was director of the Morgan City High School Chorus and inspired many of her students to choose careers in music.
These may be found around the country, teaching and performing in operas and symphonies.
Instrumental in helping to form The Tuneweavers, Morgan City’s community chorus until a few years ago, Hendrix was its director for over 30 years. She taught piano to hundreds of students and was music director at Pharr Chapel Methodist Church for many years. All three of her daughters are highly
regarded in music and related fields.
After Mrs. Hendrix passed away several years ago, many wanted to honor her with a scholarship in her name. Combining memorial contributions and a fund raising project, CCA continues to award the Marlene Hendrix Memorial Music Scholarship to a current graduate of St Mary Parish who plans to major in music and meets the requirements. This year Morgan City Live, Community Concert
Association awarded two scholarships and was able to increase the amount of each.
