Tornado touches down in Bayou Vista; no major damage reported

Officials confirmed that a tornado touched down Thursday morning in Bayou Vista, but major damage wasn't reported.

At 9:09 a.m. Thursday, a tornado touched down in Bayou Vista and crossed U.S. 90 and entered the area of the landfill in Berwick, said Duval Arthur, director of the St. Mary Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

The Port of Morgan City's cameras got video of the tornado, Arthur said.

At Walmart in Bayou Vista, a camper flipped in the parking lot, but no one was injured, he said.

The National Weather Service also received of a report Thursday morning of a tree falling on a car near Patterson, meteorologist Jared Rackley said.

Weather officials weren't sure if a tornado cause the damage or if it straight-line winds caused the tree to fall, Rackley said. But meteorologists hadn't seen anything on the radar that indicated tornadic activity in the area, he said.
