Tina Johnson will succeed her mother on Patterson City Council

PATTERSON — The City Council has a new member with a familiar name.
Tina Turner Johnson took the oath of office at Thursday’s meeting after her appointment was confirmed by the council. The meeting had been postponed from the usual first-Tuesday date because the council lacked a quorum.
Tina Turner is certainly a familiar name in the world of music. But the relevant connection Thursday was that Johnson, a Patterson High teacher, is the daughter of Sandra K. Turner.
Sandra Turner resigned from the council last month because she was moving out of the city limits.
Mayor Rodney Grogan offered some advice, telling Johnson to listen to advice from her mother and father but to make up her own mind.
“They know,” Johnson said, getting a laugh from the council and audience.
Johnson will serve on an interim basis until March, when a special election will choose a council member for the remainder of Turner’s term.
In her first roll call vote, Johnson joined three other council members in voting to make Juneteenth a paid holiday for city employees.
Before her appointment to the council, Johnson resigned from the Recreation Board.
