St Mary joins rest of state in ousting Cassidy.

St. Mary Republicans helped put Congresswoman Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming into a runoff for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, beating out incumbent Bill Cassidy in Saturday's primary.

According to complete but unofficial returns from the Secretary of State's Office, Lellow got 1,771 St. Mary votes, or 48%, in Saturday's primary voting. Fleming got 969 votes, or 26%. Cassidy 832 votes, or 23%. Mark Spencer was a distant fourth with 96 votes, or 3%.

On the Democratic side, Jamie Davis sewed up his party's Democratic nomination. In St. Mary, he drew 1,647 votes, or 52%, to oust Nicholas Albares, 803 votes or 25%, and Gary Crockett, 733 or 23%.

The Republican Senate runoff will be June 27. The general election will be Nov. 3.

Statewide totals appear below.

Gov, Jeff Landry suspended U.S. House voting after the Supreme Court's Callais ruling that struck down one of two Black-majority House districts. Under new legislation, House representation will be chosen under the traditional Louisiana open primary system, not the closed party primaries enacted for major offices this year. House candidates will qualify in August, then compete in an open primary Nov. 3 and a runoff Dec. 12, if necessary.

In the only local St. Mary race, Pearl Barnes Rack held on to her Franklin City Council seat after winning 305 votes, or 79%, to defeat Ella P. Hamilton, who got 80 votes, or 21%.

St. Mary voters also went along with voters statewide in rejecting all five proposed constitutional amendments.

Amendment 1 would have allowed some positions to have been added or removed from the unclassified civil service by law.

Amendment 2 would have granted the same legal authority to the new St. George School Board as other school boards have.

Amendment 3 would have given teachers a raise by paying down debt in the Teachers Retirement System.

Amendment 4 would have allowed local governments to stop collecting property taxes on business inventories.

Amendment 5 would have raised the mandatory retirement age for judges to 75 from 70.
