St. Mary goes for Letlow, Davis in Senate primary runoffs
St. Mary voters went for U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow and Ferriday farmer Jamie Davis in Saturday's closed primaries for U.S. Senate.
Both Letlow and Davis were headed for easy victories statewide.
According to complete but unofficial returns, Democrat Davis received 1,628 votes, or 80% in St. Mary, to 403, or 20%, for Crockett of New Orleans..
In the Republican primary runoff, Letlow received 1,788 St. Mary votes or 63%, to 1.068, or 37%, for state Treasurer John Fleming.
Davis, of Ferrday, rode a campaign message stressing affordability as inflation hovers above 4%.
His challenge will be much greater in the general election Nov. 3.
The spotlight in the Senate race has always been on the Republican side, where Letlow and Fleming beat incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy in the May 16 primary.
Letlow had the endorsement of President Donald Trump after Cassidy's vote to convict during impeachment proceeds against Trump in 2021.
Letlow and Fleming traded negative ads as the runoff approached, each claiming to be a true supporter of Trump polices, especially on immigration.
Letlow will have the edge in the Senate general election in reliably red Louisiana as the two parties struggle to secure a majority.
