Officials investigate ‘suspicious’ fire in Morgan City

Separate fire in Stephensville on flooded streets

A Sunday night fire in Morgan City caused major damage to home, and officials say the cause of that fire is suspicious. An unrelated fire early Monday in Stephensville caused minimal damage, but the flooded streets made accessing the home difficult.

At 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Morgan City firefighters responded to a fire in the 300 block of Fifth Street. On arrival, firefighters reported heavy smoke and some flames showing in two rooms. The fire had gotten into the attic and caused major damage, Morgan City Assistant Fire Chief John Price said.

No one was home at the time of fire. The State Fire Marshal, Morgan City Police Department and Morgan City Fire Department are investigating the fire, Price said.

Twenty-one personnel responded to the incident. Firefighters cleared the scene just before midnight.

Then, in a separate incident, at about 2 a.m. Monday, firefighters responded to a possible house fire on Dawn Drive in Bayou Estates Subdivision in Stephensville.

Firefighters had to go through flooded streets to get to the home, which was also had water in it, Stephensville Fire Chief Jody Acosta said. Officials found light smoke in the house due to burning wires, Acosta said.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined, but the high water may have possibly contributed to the fire, Acosta said. The occupants of the home escaped safely, and the fire damage to the home was minimal, he said.
