Morgan City Council hears about upcoming events

On one day next month, Skinner’s Barbershop will become a place not just for a haircut and some conversation, but also to check up on your health.

That was one of the events presented to the Morgan City Council at Tuesday’s meeting, but not the only one to involve health and well-being.

The events include:

—The Barbershop Prevention Bash will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 9 at Skinner’s, 1001 Railroad Ave. in Morgan City.
Clarence Robinson and Isiah Skinner Jr. told the council that the event will offer free prostate and colorectal cancer screenings and biometric screenings, as well as food and music.

The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, which is sponsoring the event along with Aetna, is sending a mobile unit.

—The council received a Roots and Ribbons invitation to the Puttin’ on the Pink 5K run and two-mile walk at 4 p.m. Oct. 7, beginning and ending at Patterson’s Morey Park.

Colleen Hammonds and Dee Hymel — wearing pink glasses, a pink hat and pink boas — said Roots and Ribbons is dedicated to helping and supporting breast cancer patients and survivors in St. Mary Parish.

Registration for the race costs $30 with T-shirt is $15 without a race T-shirt and is free for breast cancer survivors. You can register at active.com or search for Puttin’ on the Pink/Patterson LA.

—St. Mary Outreach/United Way received approval for its annual Pumpkin Patch event Oct. 23-27 at the Morgan City Petting Zoo.

The event is a fundraiser “in the form of school field trips” that include pumpkin decorating, feeding the animals, relay games and cookie decorating, wrote Jessica Dubois, Pumpkin Patch coordinator.

—The East St. Mary Kiwanis are planning a Wild Game Dinner for Sept. 14 at Morgan City Auditorium. Tickets are $25 and are available from any Kiwanis member.
Angela Kraemer and Debbie Stevens of the Kiwanis presented the council with $3,000, raised through the annual Porch Fest, for the Block 27 Fund. The fund finances improvements at Lawrence Park.

—Police Chief Chad Adams told the council that the Police Department is planning a National Night Out Against Crime event for 5-8 p.m. Oct. 17.
