In its own good time
The Review/Bill Decker
Whatever else can be said about the Atchafalaya River, it takes its own sweet time. On Tuesday morning, the stage at Morgan City was 4.7 feet and dropping very, very slowly. In May, predictions were for a crest at or above 7 feet around Memorial Day, which brings the river into the moderate flood zone and led to the closure of flood walls and the Bayou Chene Flood Control Structure. The river never quite rose that high, but now, more than six weeks later, the Atchafalaya is still above the 4-foot “action stage.” The river is now expected to stay above 4 feet until July 17.
