Everitt named acting principal at Morgan City Junior High

Gidget Everitt on Monday was named acting principal at Morgan City Junior High, Superintendent Dr. Teresa Bagwell announced.

The appointment takes effect Monday.

Everitt may be best known outside the school community for her work in organizing annual Red Ribbon Week activities that encourage young people not to get involved with drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
She started her career in 2000 as a teacher at Patterson High School. She has served at the district level as the at-risk interventionist since 2013.

“Her experiences give Mrs. Everitt an advantage in leading Morgan City Junior High School,” Bagwell said in a news release.

Michelle South, who has served as Morgan City Junior High principal, will succeed Everitt as the acting at-risk interventionist.

South has served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal for the district.

On Dec. 3, representatives of the St. Mary School Board, the Morgan City Police Department and Mayor Lee Dragna met to talk about unspecified concerns over student safety and the school administration’s response.

Dragna announced on Facebook that the parties agreed to a “heavier presence” at the school.

The mayor thanked the School Board and the Police Department “for coming to a common consensus on the safety issues.”
