Dollar General grant supports literacy programs
The Foundation for South Louisiana Community College has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support adult literacy efforts throughout the Acadiana region.
The award is part of a record-setting, single-day investment of nearly $16 million in grants awarded nationwide to support adult, family, and summer literacy programs in the 48 states where Dollar General operates. The milestone surpasses the Foundation’s previous record of more than $13.2 million awarded in 2025.
Funding will support SoLAcc’s project, Literacy Matters: Transforming Lives Through Adult Education, which is designed to address educational and workforce needs throughout Acadiana. The program provides Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education and English Language Learning instruction, helping adult learners strengthen literacy skills, achieve educational goals, and pursue greater economic opportunity.
“Support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation helps expand access to education for adult learners across our region,” said Lana Fontenot, executive director of the Foundation for SoLAcc. “Through programs like Literacy Matters, we are able to provide opportunities that empower individuals to build skills, advance their education, and create new pathways for personal and professional growth.”
The project delivers comprehensive instructional services designed to improve literacy levels, support high school equivalency attainment, strengthen English language proficiency, and enhance employment opportunities for participants.
"These funds will help educators enhance their instruction and create opportunities that help empower students to reach their full potential,” said said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
