Berwick police investigate shooting that wounded 3
Berwick police are asking the public for any information about the Friday night shooting on the U.S. 90 bridge. Three people were wounded, including a child.
Calls about multiple shots on the bridge came to the Berwick Police Department at 10:50 p.m. Friday, police said. After those calls, Morgan City police told Berwick officers that three gunshot wound victims had arrived at Ochsner St. Mary.
Police learned the shooting into a vehicle had taken place in Berwick on the bridge near the Berwick exit. Berwick investigators, with the assistance of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and Morgan City police, shut westbound lanes of the U.S. 90 bridge to be able to work the crime scene.
Several shell casings were located and recovered on the scene.
Three males, including a child, were wounded. One was in stable condition, and the others were released that night.
A fourth occupant in the vehicle, also a child, was not hit.
Police Chief David S. Leonard stressed that the ongoing violence in our communities show that these individuals have total disregard for life.
“Our communities need to take a stand against these acts of gun violence that is now in our own backyards,” the Police Department said. “Berwick police are asking that this violence be stopped, and witnesses come forward with information and let the investigators handle it.
“Too many times the criminals want to handle these incidents themselves by retaliating. This is unfortunate, because the vicious cycle will continue until someone decides enough is enough."
The investigation into the shooting continues, and investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Berwick Police Department at 985-384-7710. All callers with information can remain anonymous.
