Bayou Vista Community Center expands activity offerings
BAYOU VISTA -- The recreation district is spreading the word: The Bayou Vista Community Center isn't just for event room rentals anymore.
Recreation District No. 3 has hired an activities director and has scheduled activities 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday to bring more people to the center.
"Taxpayers pay a millage to support this facility," Recreation District Chairman Brian Head said Thursday. "The curent board wants to ensure that the community has access to this
facility that their tax dollars are paying for."
Callie Williams is the new activities director, and she's staying busy. There are specific programs for specific groups including adults, teens, senior citizens, disabled children, autistic children, and residents of Fairview Treatment Center and Claire House.
One of the available activities is the sport that has special courts springing up across the area: pickleball, the tennis-like game played on a small court and, maybe, at a slower pace.
At the Community Center, pickleball is played in the gym.
"We're trying to teach our senior citizens to play pickleball, because pickleball energizes us to be healthy," Williams said
Free pickleball lessons are available.
Other activities include cornhole, indoor fishing with paper fish, card games and board games.
There are plans for light exercise classes.
