Amelia voters OK millage renewal

Voters approved a millage renewal Saturday to allow St. Mary Parish Gravity Drainage District 6 in Amelia to levy a special tax of 7.83 mills on all the property subject to taxation in the district for 10 years, according to the Secretary of State’s website.

Seventy-four percent of voters, or 39 voters, cast ballots in favor of the proposition, while 26 percent, 14 voters, voted against the proposition. Voter turnout was just 6.7 percent for that proposition election.

The millage renewal is estimated to raise $530,240 annually for a period of 10 years, beginning in 2018 and ending in 2027, for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, maintaining and operating gravity drainage works within and for the district.

In the state treasurer’s race, 35 percent of St. Mary Parish voters cast ballots for Angele Davis. Thirty-two percent of St. Mary voters voted for Derrick Edwards, while 18 percent voted for John Schroder. Edwards and Schroder will go to a runoff Nov. 18 based on their performances statewide in the primary election.

For the state Public Service Commission, District 2 race, 43 percent of St. Mary voters voted for Craig Greene, while 29 percent voted for Lenar Whitney and 27 percent cast ballots for Damon Baldone , whom Gov. John Bel Edwards had temporarily appointed to the post in June until this special election was held. Greene won the overall race for the seat, which covers 13 parishes.

In west St. Mary, voters approved a 10-year, 14.67-mill continuation for Water and Sewer Commission 4 in Charenton, and a 10-year, 10-mill renewal for Water and Sewer Commission 5 in Jeanerette.

In the race for Franklin City Court Marshal, Carla Bourgeois Weidenboerner garnered 48 percent, or 868 votes, while Rogers C. Washington Sr. received 27 percent and Corey J. Burgess got 25 percent of the vote. Weidenboerner and Washington will face off in the November runoff.
