26 violations cited during Berwick seat belt checkpoint

Berwick police issued 20 citations during their second Click It Or Ticket Campaign seat belt checkpoint Thursday.

The Berwick Police partnered with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and the U.S. Department of Transportation/ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to bring awareness to the importance of wearing your seat belt and also educating the public on the proper use of child safety seats.

Thursday's checkpoint was conducted on La. 182 between Patti Drive and Renwick Boulevard, Over four hours, 1,352 cars were screened with 20 citations being issued on total of 26 traffic violations:

--Nine seat belt violations.

--Six child restraint violations.

--Five expired or no motor vehicle inspection violations.

--Four window tint violations.

--One suspended driver's license violation.

--One expired driver's license violation.

Chief David Leonard Sr. thanked the many motorists who showed support for what officers were doing which is the safety of our roadways.

"Whether it was a thumbs up or a thank you to the officers for what they were doing to keep our roadways safe, our officers truly appreciate the kindness and support shown," the Police Department said in a news release. "Many motorists handed our officers drinks, offered to bring snowballs, you name it. This is a testament to the community support in our area for our men and women in law enforcement."

Leonard also commend officers for their professionalism and job well done.
