UPDATED WITH OFFICER'S IDENTITY: Lafayette officer dead, three others wounded in Jeanerette standoff

A Lafayette police officer was killed and three officers were injured Thursday after an hours-long hostage standoff in Jeanerette.

State police are investigating, a routine procedure when police officers are involved in a shooting.

One suspect is in custody: Nyjal Hurst, 31. There was no immediate word on the charges.

Police reports say Jeanerette city marshals attempted to serve Hurst with a warrant at his home on Hubertville Road near Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jeanerette when the hostage standoff began.

Two hostages are believed to have been held, including a juvenile.

Media accounts say Hurst was wanted in Iberia Parish on an attempted first-degree murder charge, in Jeanerette on home invasion and battery charges, and in St. Mary Parish on charges that include armed robbery, domestic abuse and attempted carjacking.

The law enforcement response included agencies from multiple jurisdictions, including a SWAT team from Lafayette. A statement from the Lafayette Police Department said two officers were shot and two others were hit by bullet fragments. The three survivors were treated for what police called non-life-threatening injuries.

Police identified the slain Lafayette officer as Cpl. Segus Jolivette. A candlelight vigil is planned for 7 p.m. Friday at Jeanerette City Hall.

State police said investigators are working to gather information, and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is responding to process the scene. This is an active investigation; additional information will be released when it becomes available, state police said.
