Saturday's Mistletoe & Moss event promotes local shopping

Morgan City Main Street's Mistletoe & Moss shopping event returns Saturday and will be back under the U.S. 90 bridge for the second straight year.

Seventy-six booths, nearly twice the number that participated last year, are expected to be part of the event part 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, said Beth Chiasson, director of Morgan City Main Street and Morgan City Municipal Auditorium.

The auditorium was the site for the first Mistletoe & Moss in 2019. But when late fall 2020 rolled around, COVID-19 restrictions were in place.

So the event went downtown and outdoors, where it drew hundreds of shoppers despite some rain. So Mistletoe & Moss is back under the bridge this year.

"A lot of people will have Christmas-type items" Chiasson said, "whether it's decor, ornaments or gift items."

Mistletoe & Moss is also billed as a small business shopping event that coincides with Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, "calls to attention the importance of shopping at the small businesses that serve as the backbone of the American economy and our local communities," according to the fundera.com website, operated by Nerd Wallet.

Small Business Saturday is nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to promote shopping at home-owned stores.
