City of Franklin prepares for America’s 250th Anniversary
The Franklin City Council tackled public safety matters and looked ahead to upcoming community celebrations during its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 16 at City Hall.
Mayor Eugene Foulcard opened the meeting and urged residents to remain weather aware as a tropical system was expected to move through the area. He assured the public that the city’s flood protection measures are in place, noting that flood gates would be closed as needed and all pumps are functioning properly.
Council members unanimously approved the minutes from the May 19 meeting and received the city’s April financial statements.
Several resolutions focused on strengthening fire protection services. The council approved a cooperative agreement allowing the City of Franklin to partner with the City of Patterson on efforts to improve fire protection services in Patterson.
Council members also voted to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Centerville Volunteer Fire Company to jointly pursue a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. If awarded, the grant will help fund the purchase of portable radios, with both agencies sharing any required matching costs.
In preparation for Franklin’s America 250th Anniversary Celebration, the council approved a temporary lifting of fireworks and noise restrictions to accommodate planned festivities.
Mayor Foulcard also invited residents to attend an upcoming inauguration and special council meeting. He encouraged the public to participate in local celebrations and reminded residents that a fireworks display will be held at Parc Sur La Teche on July 4 as part of the city’s observance of America’s 250th anniversary.
Councilman Joseph Garrison and City Attorney Russel J. Cremaldi were absent from the meeting. No public comments were offered, and no guests were in attendance.
