Baldwin to enforce law on upkeep of properties

Some Baldwin residents will soon face Mayor’s Court for non-compliance of the town’s junk and weed and abandoned property ordinances.
The Baldwin Beautification Club is teaming up with the Police Department to issue citations to residents who have been warned that their abandoned trailers, junk cars and tall weeds remain an eye sore and hazard in the town. The Beautification Club, and board members under the direction of Alderwoman Margaret “Faye” Coleman, has sent out letters and verbal warnings to those who are in violation of the law. “We are sending out citations this week, it’s now time for something to be done,” Coleman said.
Those who are in violation of the junk and weed ordinance on first offense will be fined no less than $100 and no more than $250. Second offense violators will be fined no less than $250 and no more than $500 or imprisonment for no more than 45 days. Abandoned property violators will face a fine of $500 or six months in jail. Under the ordinances the town reserves the right to charge $100 an hour for any clean-up effort that has to be done by the town as a result of the violator’s negligence
