Theriot is guest speaker at August AARP meeting

St. Mary AARP Chapter 4435 held its monthly meeting and meal on Aug. 7 at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center, home of St. Mary AARP, in Morgan City.
The 185 AARP attendees were treated to a presentation by Christy Theriot, a retired Morgan City educator.
Theriot informed members of the resources Roots & Ribbons Foundation of St. Mary Parish provides. As a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Roots & Ribbons provides financial assistance for medical expenses related to breast cancer, such as early detection screenings, imaging, biopsy, treatment and reconstruction surgeries.
St. Mary Parish Breast Cancer Foundation was formed to raise funds dedicated to keeping funding for breast cancer in the parish.
She said it has been a tradition since 2008 that there is a partnership amongst Morgan City High School, Berwick High School, Vanderbilt Catholic High School, Central Catholic High School, and E.D. White to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.
The business portion of the AARP meeting included an announcement by President Bryce Merrill about several upcoming activities.
Those activities include an AARP sponsored trip to Branson, Missouri, Nov. 9-15, and Christmas in the Oaks on Dec. 7. He advised to contact activity organizer Kathy Roundtree at 985-637-3893 or 985-446-9616 for information about the trips.
Other trips planned are two trips to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, with one being in the spring, April 28-May 3, 2024, and the other in winter, Nov. 3-8, 2024. For more information contact Vickie Armstrong at 985-856-9210.
An AARP inside beat the heat garage sale is being planned. The public is invited to participate. Tables will be provided with the date to be announced in September.
An August meeting meal of baked chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, cake and water was provided. Following bingo, several donated items were awarded to various members.
Members celebrating August birthdays and anniversaries were recognized.
