Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp applications available

NEW ORLEANS — Applications are being accepted for the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp being held June 25 through July 12. Since its inception in 1995, more than 2,000 youths and young adults aged 10-21, have been served by the summer jazz camp.
Created as a way to preserve the rich jazz tradition of New Orleans, the jazz camp develops the next generation of jazz artists by preserving this American art form, said camp organizers.
Students will participate in programs that center on refining musical skills, including composition, voice and swing dancing. Students will be taught by some of the city’s most revered and respected music educators.
In addition to announcing the opening of camp registration, the jazz camp announces this year’s artists-in-residence. Among those artists are traditional jazz drummer Anthony Bennett, tuba player Julius “Jap” Mckee, jazz educator and trumpeter Kevin Williams, and Social Aid & Pleasure Club members Barbara Lacen-Keller and Norman Dixon Jr. Lacen-Keller and Dixon will focus on the history of benevolent societies and second lines.
Those interested in attending the summer jazz camp should submit an application, which can be found on the camp’s website at www.louisarmstrongjazzcamp.com. The website also has a list of criteria for those applying. All camp activities will take place on the campus of Loyola University New Orleans. Housing is also available on campus for students.
Some of the fees include (fees differ for returning students and can be found online):
—Audition fee: $35/student non-refundable audition fee for first-time students.
—Registration fee first time students, $100.
—Student tuition: three weeks, $600.
—Flat rate local college student, $300.
—Resident student for three weeks, $5,000.

Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp honors jazz in the place of its birth and fosters a greater appreciation of this art form.
