Berwick falls to Erath and drops to 2-4

Last Friday the Berwick Panthers faced off against the Erath Bobcats. The game was Erath’s homecoming, and a game where they improved to 6-1 after their 43-7 defeat of the Panthers.
The Bobcats started the game off hot, scoring back-to-back touchdowns. Erath’s running back duo Mason Hebert and Aiden Bourque each had a touchdown, and quarterback Jack Landry had a 2-point conversion to give the Bobcats an early 15-0 lead.
Berwick’s third drive of the game started off with an Erath onside kick, which was recovered by the Bobcats but called back due to illegal touching. The penalty gave the Panthers good starting field position, and they took advantage of it.
Carter Whipple took a slant 35 yards to the house for a Panthers touchdown, decreasing the Bobcats lead to 8.
Berwick’s defense would step up following the touchdown. The Bobcats would turn the ball over on downs and miss a 26-yard field goal.
Following the missed field goal the Panthers put together one of their best drives all season. Crappell was spreading the rock, completing passes to four different receivers. The Panthers had two fourth down conversions as well.
The drive looked like it could make it at least a 15-13 game, but Jayden Gibson fumbled after catching a slant and getting a first down.
The fumble was then returned by Erath all the way into Panther territory. The Gibson fumble was controversial though, as one official had him marked down, and the other saying the opposite.
There was about a 5-minute conversation between the referees, but the fumble ended up counting and it was Erath’s ball.
The fumble would be a turning point in the game for Erath, as Berwick would not be able to put together a drive after that, and the defense could not get Erath off the field.
Berwick would end up losing 43-7 and falling to 2-4 on the season.
This Friday, the Panthers play the Patterson Lumberjacks, the crosstown rivals. Patterson has yet to win a game this season.
