Assumption routs Morgan City 57-7

Assumption senior running back Ernest Adams had a knack for finding the end zone Friday night, and that was bad news for the Morgan City Tigers.
Adams helped the Mustangs set the tone of the game by scoring five touchdowns in a 57-7 win against the Tigers in a District 7-4A game. Adams finished with 14 carries for 109 yards..
Assumption’s (5-5 overall, 3-2 in district) first score came via the passing game as quarterback Landon Hebert connected with wide receiver Stephen McBride on a slant route for an 80-yard touchdown, and the two-point conversion made the score 8-0.
After forcing a three-and-out, Adams went to work and scored on a 9-yard run for a 15-0 lead.
Morgan City (2-7, 0-5 in district) gave the ball right back to the Mustangs by fumbling the ball at the 19-yard line. Adams, once again, found the end zone on a 6-yard with 47 seconds left in the first quarter, and the Mustangs added the two-point conversion for a 23-0 lead.
“Early on, it was like a misfiring engine. When we fired on all cylinders, it was all big plays,” Assumption Coach Anthony Paine said. “I was very happy with our defensive effort, but there are definitely some things we need to clean up going into a playoff game.”
Adams scored his third touchdown of the first half from 30 yards out for a 30-0 lead.
After stuffing the Tigers’ offense, Assumption’s special teams got into the scoring act. Zyshawn Richard fielded a short punt and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown for a 37-0 lead.
Assumption’s defense helped set up the next touchdown when Traivon Bozeman intercepted a Morgan City pass. Adams capitalized on the turnover when he scored his fourth touchdown on a 1-yard run with eight seconds left in the first half for a 44-0 lead.
Morgan City was limited to 34 yards of total offense in the first half.
“Assumption is a great football team, and we came out here to compete. We were just unable to compete at a high enough level,” Morgan City Coach Eric Howard said. “We have plenty to build on going into next season with some athletes coming back, and this program is at a different state than it was six months ago when I arrived. “
Morgan City opened the second half with great field position after a Mustang penalty. Kerwin Francois capitalized on the field position and put Morgan City on the scoreboard with a 36-yard run to cut Assumption's lead to 44-7.
But Adams answered yet again when he scored his fifth and final touchdown on a 16-yard run for a 50-7 lead with 4:20 left in the third quarter.
The Mustangs capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter when Shawn Hall returned a punt for a 52-yard touchdown and a 57-7 lead.
In addition to his 109 yards rushing and five touchdowns, Adams added one catch for 33 yards and scored a two-point conversion.
Morgan City finished with 29 yards of offense (negative 10 yards rushing, 39 yards passing).
