UNO's Randi Brown named 1st-team All-SLC

University of New Orleans junior guard Randi Brown has been named First-Team AllSouthland Conference based on voting by the league’s coaches and sports information directors.
Brown, the conference’s leading scorer, was a third-team selection in 2015-16 as a sophomore and was voted Freshman of the Year in 2014-15. She becomes the first New Orleans player selected to the first team since the Privateers joined the Southland Conference in 2013.
“It’s about improving all the time and making the team better,” Brown said in a news release. “It’s amazing to go from (eight) wins your freshman and sophomore years and now to 14 wins plus post-season, and that’s a really big accomplishment. Our team is what’s important, and without them, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish or receive anything.”
Brown, a Central Catholic High School alum, led the Southland Conference in scoring this season with 22.8 points a contest. She was tops in the conference in points scored with 638, the third highest single-season point total in University of New Orleans history, and she is the No. 9 scorer nationally among NCAA Division I players.
On New Year’s Eve, she tallied 45 points in a conference win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. It was the highest single-game point total of the season also in the Southland
Conference.
The Houma native reached double figures in 27-of-28 games, with two games of more than 40 points, five games with more than 30 points and 18 games of 20 points or more. She leads her team in categories other than scoring like minutes played (31.8), assists (2.7) and steals (1.9).
Brown has 1,449 career-points, placing her third among all-time scorers in UNO history behind Carvie Upshaw (1,759 points) and tops on the list, former UNO All American Sandra Hodge (2,824 points).
Brown was voted Southland Conference Player of the Week three times this season for the weeks of Nov. 28, Jan. 2 and March 6. She helped the Privateers to a 14-14 overall record and a 9-9 record in conference play — the highest win total at New Orleans since the 2008-09 season.
“I’m so proud of Randi for all the hard work she has put in,” New Orleans Head Coach Keeshawn Davenport said in a news release. “I’m also very proud for our university to have someone listed on the first team.”
The Privateers and Brown will play in the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament for the first time Friday at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. New Orleans, the No. 4 seed, earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of a first-round game between Northwestern State and Texas A&MCorpus Christi. Tipoff is 11 a. m.
