Louisiana College wins 10th straight softball game

The Louisiana College Lady Wildcats completed their third consecutive American Southwest Conference series sweep Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 victory against Sul Ross State University.
The Wildcats scored all six of their runs in the first two innings, and Savannah Settle surrendered just one run on a solo home run in the fourth.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning on defense, the Wildcats came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. Shelby Bergeron, a Berwick High alum, led off the first with a sharp single down the left field line, then stole second base during the at-bat by Sami Walters. An infield single by Walters and some aggressive base running caused a throwing error that allowed Bergeron to score on the throw into right field.
Mattie Stine followed with an RBI single to left to give Louisiana College a 2-0 lead just three batters into the game. The next batter, Taylor Hammock, ripped a double to right center field that brought pinch runner Kourtney Leblanc all the way around from first for the inning’s third run.
A passed ball advanced Hammock to third, and Jordan Mason brought her in with a sacrifice fly to center field, as Louisiana College recorded its fourth run as the first out was recorded.
Another three up, three down inning in the second for starter Settle brought the Wildcats offense back to the plate with all the momentum. Kourtney Herrera started the inning with a base hit to left, and Bergeron followed with an infield single that put runners at first and second with no out. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance a base before Walters executed a squeeze bunt that brought pinch runner Haley Vezinat in from third, and Bergeron took her spot at the base.
Bergeron gave Louisiana College a 6-0 lead as a pitch got away from the Lobos’ catcher.
Settle had her perfect game, no-hitter and shutout end on a 2-0 pitch to Lobos leadoff batter Jav’ana Gonzalez that cleared the left field wall for Sul Ross’ only run.
Settle earned her second win of the series, sixth of the season and fourth in her last four starts. She pitched her seventh complete game of the season. In seven innings, she surrendered one run on four hits, striking out eight and walking one.
B e r g e r o n a n d Hammock each finished 2-for-3 at the plate, with Bergeron scoring two of the Wildcats’ six runs. Walters, Stine, Hammock and Mason all had RBIs for Louisiana College.
The Wildcats have won 10 consecutive games for the first time since a 12-game streak in 2015. They will return to action this weekend when they travel to Abilene, Texas to face Hardin-Simmons. The series is scheduled for a single game Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
