The closure is likely to last at least through the end of April, although the walking trail remains open. Officials urge people to observe social distancing precautions.

5 more COVID-19 cases in St. Mary; 60 more La. deaths reported

Five more positive tests for COVID-19 in St. Mary were reported at noon Friday by the Louisiana Office of Public Health.

The new cases, reported since noon Thursday, bring the parish's total to 47 after 185 tests. St. Martin's case count grew by 11 to 69 after 102 tests, and two more Assumption residents tested positive for a total of 33 after 82 tests.

Statewide, another 1,147 people tested positive to bring the total to 10,297. Another 60 people have died, bring the death toll to 370.

The state said 1,707 people have been hospitalized, and 535 of them are on ventilators.

St. Mary is part of the Louisiana Department of Health's Region 3 along with Lafourche, St. John, St. Charles, St. James, Assumption and Terrebonne parishes. The OPH reported Friday 37 ventilators are in use in the region, and another 56 are available

Twenty-six of 97 intensive care beds are in use in Region 3.
