Man arrested in fatal shooting near Patterson-Donaldsonville football game

Patterson High School football fans at home and on the road lived through a scary hour Friday, when a shooting was reported during the Lumberjack game at Donaldsonville.

The shooting turned out to have happened outside the Donaldsonville High stadium. At 9:18 p.m. Friday, not quite an hour after shooting, St. Mary Parish schools posted on Facebook that students were safe and coming home.

The shooting resulted in one death and one serious injury. Ascension Parish authorities booked a Gonzalez man on murder and attempted murder charges.

The football game was suspended and the stadium cleared after the shooting.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies learned of the shooting about 8:30 p.m. at the corner of Clay and Lee streets. They found two men with multiple gunshot wounds..

Deputies and were able to respond quickly. They performed lifesaving measures while waiting for ambulances to arrive. Acadian AirMed was called in.

One of the victims, Tyree Parker, 21, of Donaldsonville died later at an area hospital. The second victim remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Deputies also saw a man who appeared to be the shooter fleeing the scene.

The man was arrested. The Sheriff's Office identified him as Malik Fowler, 21, of Gonzales. After questioning, he was booked on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, simple criminal damage to property and disturbing the peace.

Detectives learned that Fowler was acquainted with the victims and had engaged in an argument before firing the fatal shots, the Sheriff's Office said.

In Louisiana, second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole. Attempted second-degree murder is punishable by up to 50 years in prison.
