(Updated) Police: Drunk driver arrested after car hits pole, flips

Minor injuries in crash that knocked out power in Wyandotte Subdivision

A suspect was booked on a DWI charge Monday after his car hit a utility pole, flipped and landed on a parked vehicle at a nearby business on La. 182 in Morgan City, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.

The driver received treatment for minor injuries while a female passenger refused treatment, police said. No one was inside the parked vehicle.

The crash knocked out power in the Wyandotte Subdivision area. Utility workers restored electricity within a couple of hours.

Robert Kelly, 54, of Grace Street in Siracusaville, was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Monday on charges of DWI first offense, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and driving under suspension.

At about 2:30 p.m. Monday, patrol officers responded to the area of La. 182 just east of Roderick Street in regard to a crash involving an overturned vehicle.

Officers arrived when Kelly was identified as the driver. Police found evidence that Kelly operated the vehicle in a reckless manner, traveling off the roadway, striking a utility pole and overturning onto another vehicle that was parked in the parking lot of a business in the area, Blair said.

Kelly was in an intoxicated state and transported to Teche Regional Medical Center for minor injuries where he submitted to blood analysis that are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, Blair said. After Kelly was released from the medical facility, he was transported to Morgan City jail with no bail set yet.
