WILLIAM CLYDE 'BILL' SHAFER

December 19, 1940 — April 7, 2024
William Clyde “Bill” Shafer, 83, of San Antonio, Texas passed away peacefully on April 7th with his daughter, Christy, by his side after a battle with end-stage renal failure. He was saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ as a young man, growing and maturing throughout his lifetime in his walk with God.
Bill was born December 19th, 1940 to Clyde Jr. and Bernita LaNelle Walzel Shafer in Kingsville, Texas. He spent a portion of his youth on the King Ranch and in several small towns in Texas and Louisiana, playing football in each of the 5 high schools he attended, and graduated in 1959 from New Iberia High School. He started his college education at LSU, then transferred to Nicholls State University where two very important life events occurred — he graduated and met the love of his life, D’Lynn with whom he enjoyed 50 years of marriage. Bill worked for a few oilfield related companies before making the move to Oil & Gas Rental Services Inc. in 1972 from which he retired after 30 years of dedicated service.
In his free time, Bill enjoyed cooking, walking the Berwick trail, traveling, playing cards with his family and friends, and spending as much time as he could with his grandkids. He participated in multiple children’s ministries at both Bayou Vista Baptist Church and Churchill Baptist Church in San Antonio. He was a deacon and long-time member of Bayou Vista Baptist Church and joined Churchill Baptist Church when he moved to San Antonio in 2017. When D’Lynn became ill the last few years of her life, Bill was a devoted and protective advocate for her, and never left her side during her illnesses and was holding her hand when she breathed her last breath on earth.
Bill was preceded in death by his son, William Clyde Shafer, Jr.; both of his parents; his in-laws, Dan L. and Frances Stevens Dodds; nephew, Michael Steven Shafer; beloved wife, D’Lynn Dodds Shafer; and brother, Howard Erwin “Guy” Shafer.
Left to treasure the memory of this wonderful man are his daughters, Rebecca Shafer Crocker (Del) of Mississippi and Christy Shafer Fontenot (Jim) of San Antonio, Texas; grandkids, Joshua William Eremia (Scott), Katherine Grace Eremia, Christopher James “CJ” Fontenot, Allyson Marie Crocker, and Ryleigh Grace Crocker.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Bayou Vista Baptist Church. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 9:00 AM and continue until time of services. Rev. Steve Kelly will officiate the services.
