UPDATED: Norwood anchors Team USA mixed 4x400-meter relay to a bronze medal

Morgan City High alum Vernon Norwood lifted Team USA to a bronze medal in the mixed 4x400-meter relay Saturday at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Norwood ran the anchor leg for the third-place finish. Team USA finished with a time of 3:10.22.
The squad was in fourth place when Norwood took the baton for the relay team’s final 400-meters.
“At the end of the day, just walking away at the Olympic Games with a medal is a pretty good feeling,” Norwood told USA Today.
Poland won gold with a time of 3:09.87, while Dominican Republic finished with the silver medal with a time of 3:10.21.
While Team USA won its heat with a time of 3:11.39 in the preliminary round Friday, the group was disqualified
However, the United States was reinstated for the finals Saturday after winning its appeal of a disqualification for passing the baton outside the permitted exchange zone, according to USA Today. Lance Brauman, coach of one of the competitors involved in the contested exchange, told USA Today Network’s IndyStar that runners were not lined up correctly by officials.
Norwood did not run in the preliminary round.
In the finals, the U.S. relay consisted of Trevor Stewart, Kendall Ellis, Kaylin Whitney and Norwood.
Norwood also is listed in the relay pool for the men’s 4x400-meter relay. The first round will be run Friday, and the finals will be run a day later.
