Belle Danse Orchid Farm will have a tent filled with orchids and other plants

New Orleans Home & Garden Show is March 27-29

NEW ORLEANS — For 65 years, the New Orleans Home & Garden Show has featured the latest in renovation and building ideas, according to the show’s news release. In a bit of a twist in 2020, it’s the home show’s home that is undergoing its own renovation prompting the show to move to the Morial Convention Center. Hall I will be the backdrop for the annual New Orleans Home & Garden Show Home as the $450 million renovations begin on the Mercedez-Benz Super-dome, the permanent home for the show.
Presentations and exhibits will be held March 27-29.
This year, advanced home technology and automation highlight the show, with Campo Better Living bringing in its tiny home that will be open for visitors to walk through and test the latest automation for both inside and outside the home.
In addition, electronics expert, Boyce Thompson, is returning to the home show with some of the most high-tech items for the home, including a humanoid robot, FoodCyler Food Compactor, which creates usable compost in less than three hours odor-free, and the ever-popular Aibo is returning to the Big Easy. Aibo is a personalized robotic dog that takes owner commands, and this year, he has a friend, a new robotic cat, Nao.
Those looking for outdoor living concepts will find more locally conceived ideas at that this year’s show. Belle Danse Orchid Farm in Plaquemines Parish is building out a huge greenhouse-like tent that will be filled with hundreds of show-stopping orchids, pots, planters, and a variety of mounted and potted tropicals. For those looking for ideas to ‘‘dress up” their yards, Outdoor Cedar Solutions will show outdoor enthusiasts how to build a pergola in just a few hours as they will have pergola kits available and will also be giving away a $10,000 pergola.
The New Orleans Home & Garden Show announces its first-ever Bayou Battle of the Build that challenge area high-school students competing in a planning and building project; it can be anything the students can imagine and build. All the final products will be judged by a panel of local builders and auctioned off with proceeds going back to the school.
The ever-popular Entergy “Arcs & Sparks” mobile demonstration rig, which is a visual safety program about the dangers of working around power lines, will be a part of this year’s show. Entergy linemen will pull an 8,000-volt electrical arc off a model of an energized distribution line by making contact with various grounded objects – including a tree branch, a ladder, and a fence. The dramatic result: a 10,000-degree arc in a fraction of a second, which amounts to a 10- to 20-ft. ball of fire. The demonstration shows what can happen if a person comes in contact with a power line.
Entergy will have information regarding its electric vehicle charging stations and an electric generating bicycle. Customers looking for information on bill payment options and low-income programs will also have the opportunity to speak to Energy representatives.
Other features in 2020:
— The ever-popular Dumpster Diving local artisan, Benjamin Bullins, is back with another great hands-on project. Bullins will have his signature dumpster full of recycled items and show visitors will be invited to join him in creating unique art all conceived from items pulled out of a dumpster.
—Are you looking to create a high-end backyard oasis? Scott Staimpel will have ideas and creations on display as he turns indoor space in the Convention Center into an outdoor sanctuary as he has products from Plant & Palm Tropical Outlet.
—If you are seeking building or remodeling advice from local professionals, the popular “Ask the Builder” is back. Members of the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans, which has presented this show for over six decades, will staff a booth so visitors can engage in one-on-one conversations with local builders.
—Four-legged friends are back at Bark Park, which is the place to go to see adoptable puppies and talk to animal experts. Dog agility and obedience training shows will also be featured.
