Arbor Day at Burden returns Jan. 21

BATON ROUGE — The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden’s annual Arbor Day celebration is back and better than ever.
This year’s event, slated Jan. 21, will feature a wide range of activities to help people of all ages learn about the importance of trees while enjoying time in the great outdoors.
The fun will start at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 1 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
New for 2023 is a partnership with Baton Rouge Green, which will host a tree giveaway, and ax throwing with the Timber Tigers, a forestry club for LSU students. Old favorites such as tree climbing with Bofinger’s Tree Service and a visit from Smokey Bear will return.
As with previous Arbor Day celebrations, attendees will be able to plant a tree in the Burden Woods and receive GPS coordinates so they can track its growth. These trees will help reforest areas of the woods that suffered damage during previous hurricane seasons.
Arbor Day is officially celebrated in Louisiana on the third Friday of each January — a time of year that is ideal for planting trees here.
The Botanic Gardens at Burden is part of the Burden Museum & Gardens complex at 4560 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge.
