Employees of the Month were recognized by members of the St. Mary Parish School Board during their May meeting. They are from left Dominic Ribardi, custodian at Berwick Elementary; Jamie Lancon, librarian at Centerville Elementary; and Brandy Smith, physical education teacher at M.E. Norman Elementary.
Candidates for St. Mary Superintendent of Schools were pared down to five contenders Tuesday. The school board met in a brief special meeting where they agreed to choose five applicants by ballot of those board members present. The board also agreed to vote to break a tie if it occurred.

Central Catholic had five representatives on the All-District 7-1A baseball first team. The Eagles had a pair of pitchers make the team in sophomores Blake Hidalgo and Gregory Leger. Hidalgo finished the season 3-0, while Leger was 2-1.

Morgan City Rotary Club members learned of the progress of construction on the new power plant being built for LEPA on Youngs Road from LEPA General Manger Cordell Grand at a recent luncheon.

Students of the Month

Duck rescue

Last Friday the Franklin Fire Department received a call from Ted Mire on La. 182 who reported that he has an old telephone pole on his property that wood peckers and wood ducks use as a nesting site. Mire said a wood duck hen was stuck and in distress. Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Hildreth responded with an engine company and firefighter Andrew Stewart III to assist. The hen came out of her nest about 15 feet up the pole and was hanging by her neck. Hildreth said she apparently collected some twine for nesting and became entangled. They raised a ladder and Hildreth, above, and below at right with the duck and Mire, climbed up to cut the cord from around the duck’s neck. She was in obvious distress and exhausted from her ordeal, he said, but he finished removing the twine and Mire released her to drink and feed. Mother and brood are reportedly doing fine.
